every. single. person.

The downfall of Chinese learners, and why it's like being overweight (which I've been)

2-minute read:

You're somewhere in this process:

  1. Step 1. Get curious about Chinese
  2. Step 2: Learn a few words
  3. Step 3: realize putting many words into a sentence and speaking comfortably isn't a walk in the park
  4. Step 4: Either:
    1. A) Give up/learn inconsistently for 10-20 years
    2. B) Immerse yourself intensely to become fluent in 1-3 years (not necessarily in China, just having a system for consistent progress is important here).

Every. Single. Person. I've met. Reaches. Fluency. This. Way.

Why?

Because getting to intermediate is easy.

Getting to advanced requires you to learn differently.

It's like getting fit.

Everyone can get their 10k steps/day in. And feel great.

But less than 1-2% of the world population has a visible 6-pack. (Including myself 😆)

But here's the good news: you don't need yeeaaaars to get a 6 pack.

You just need a short focused period of time.

Here's what I realized:

This is the pattern for the most worthy goals.

Like becoming fluent in a language.

All you need is a short period of focus to break through and get the results you want.

If you're ready to focus 4-6h per week and make that happen,

And if you want my help, just book a strategy session here.

We'll map out the steps based on your goal and current level.

Let's rock your Chinese!

PS: Imagine if you did 1 hard thing every 1-2 years, and focused intentionally.

How many skills could you actually get really good at?

I didn't realize this when I focused and learned 5000 Spanish words in a couple of months.

It was hard.

But it was worth it.

This is a slightly different email. Because we're about to step through a door. A door that many people have stepped through in the past. But even though many have been through this experience... it's still so... Uncertain. A tiny human will emerge into this world when passing through this door. It feels like a completely different reality Surreal. Scary? For sure. I need to keep reminding myself that billions of people have been through this before. And almost all of them survived and did...

I spoke with a British guy this morning who wanted to speak Chinese fluently. Cool goal, but... There was 1 massive problem. (He wasn't aware of it himself) He thought he could reach fluency just by talking with ChatGPT and watching YouTube vids. (It wasn't even his strategy that was wrong though) YouTube and ChatGPT are ok tools for language learning. The biggest issue was that his expectations were completely messed up. I meet soooo many people who think they can become fluent in Chinese...

From hesitating to speak, to full fluency in only 3 months. This is probably one of my favorite stories... Chaniece knew a lot of Chinese, But when she wanted to speak, she would often revert to more basic vocab. She couldn't get over the mental block... I showed her how to train her speaking effectively, And I feel like her Chinese is even better than my English. Knowing vocab is not the only goal when learning Chinese. Making sure you can actively use it is just as important. If you want to...
